Dick Gabriel Experience with LISP

The interview with Dick Gabriel was an interesting one and example on what could happen when someone depends a lot in just one language. At the beginning he explains how LISP was considered to be the future of AI and it made sense why it looked like that was the case. LISP is one of the programming languages where the data structure is used also to program. This could be a huge advantage when creating the AI cause the program is able to understand how is able to create other programs if the basic of data structure is implemented properly, in this case Lists. Now of course they thought LISP was the future of AI there was a decline on the research on what they could do with LISP. It is true that Dick decided to take a break from anything related to programming but as soon as he wanted to return , there was nothing for him to do. No one was really interested on LISP at the moment. This was a hard moment for him but of course he was able to turn it back. Now my point is that depending on one language it could create some problems for some programmers. Even when the language is amazing it doesn't mean is going to become popular. In time new programming languages will come and could replace other languages, with new functionalities or the ones that satisfy better the demand for business. This is great ability for any type of programmer and is able to understand new manuals syntax and not closing its mind to just one language. It is true that COBOL is a language that it does have a big demand but people are looking for someone who is able to understand this language and the new ones. So they can create new integration that would create a bigger competitive advantages. Understanding what the companies need or how the market is behaving is a extremely important skill for any programmer that wants to survive. So we should just see Languages as a tool to a disposal and during time there could be a possibility we need to upgrade our tools.
